Printing Labels Troubleshooting Steps

Sometimes if you install your ZPL printer directly from Windows, it won't work. If this is your situation (the ZPL won't print), consider the following steps:

  1. Start and Stop your Print Spooler under Task Manager > Services.

  2. Right click (or long-press on tablet) and stop, then start this service.

  3. Install the ZPL Setup Utility. https://www.zebra.com/us/en/support-downloads/printer-software/printer-setup-utilities.html

  1. Install your ZPL printer drives from the Zebra Setup Utility.

  2. In Windows under Printers (see image below):

d. In Windows 11:

"Let Windows manage my default printer" is ON.
Turn off (or toggle off) the setting "Let Windows manage my default printer".

  1. In Windows, under Printers, uninstall all unwanted printers from computer (many times, printing issues involve conflicting printer and print drivers).

If Your Printer won’t Print from Stratus

If you can print a test label from the Zebra Setup Utility, but not from Stratus

  1. Read the LOG file generated by the Stratus Print app. Exit the Stratus Print app first (so that it will flush its remaining log entries), then go to
    C:\Users\<Windows User>\AppData\Roaming\GTP STRATUS Logs\Print\
See the Log.Txt file in that folder. The newest activity is at the bottom. Search for the word “Error” or “Warn”

  2. Check Windows User Rights:  You do not need to run the Stratus Printer app as an administrator, but IT department must not lock down the user profile's write rights to the %appdata% part of the hard drive.

  3. Check Firewalls: The Workstation app uses SignalR over port 443, therefore your IT department has to allow websockets via your firewall.

  4. If you cannot print with a certain user, troubleshoot by trying to print with a user that has elevated rights on the machine and in Stratus.

  5. Try to print a label from a computer NOT connected to your network. If you don’t know how to do this, the GTP SD team can impersonate a user in your company and print to one of their ZPL printers. If they are able to print to a ZPL from Stratus via a user from your company, then there is likely a Windows policy on your computer that prevents the app (via that user) from printing.

  6. If you still have no success, send the log file from Step 1 above to the GTP Service Desk
