The Markup tools for Assembly PDF Assembly Attachments, Package PDF Package Attachments, Assembly CAD Sheets, and the Package CAD Sheets tab all share similar functionality . displays sheets created in the authoring tool in the Packages > Viewer and in the Assemblies > Vieweras they all can be uploaded to BIM 360 and versioned. Note: Markup is also available within the Package’s Viewer and the Assembly’s Viewer, but these markups cannot be versioned and saved to BIM 360.

Markup Setup

For assemblies and packages, a PDF attachment must created.

Markup Tools

The following describes how to use the Markup tools. The example is in the CAD Sheet.

General

Start a Markup

  1. To access the Markup tools, go to the Assemblies > CAD Sheet tab and click the Markup button:

    1. PDF - Click the Markups icon in the Attachments table.

    2. CAD Sheet - Click the Markup icon.

  2. The Markup tools will flyout and the Markup version number will display.

    1. Optionally, click the expand to full screen button (top right). The PDF or CAD Sheet will display in the viewer and the Markup Tools will display.

      1. V1 displays until a markup is made and the Upload Version button is clicked. See the Upload Version Markups section for more information.

      2. In the PDF viewer, the mouse can be used to pan and zoom the PDF.

Place a Markup

  1. Click any Markup tool to Markup the CAD Sheet. a Markup Tool (Ex. Cloud). As the user moves the mouse, the mouse will change to indicate where the markup will be placed.

  2. Click to place the markup (Ex. For a cloud click and drag to form the cloud).

    1. Whenever a Markup tool is selected the following dialog will display until Cancel or Save Markup is clicked.

      1. Undo - Click this button (arrow pointing left) to undo markup edits since the last time Save Markup was clicked.

      2. Redo - Click this button (arrow pointing right) to redo markup edits since the last time Save Markup was clicked.

      3. Cancel - Cancel will cancel all Markups since the last time Save Markup was clicked.

      4. Save Markup -

    1. Note: CAD Sheet Markups are placed in relation to the CAD Sheet. For example:

      1. The screenshot below displays the size of the CAD Sheet when the Markup was added.

  3. After placing any markup, the following actions can be done to a the markup object:

    1. Select

Save Markup (Set) and Upload Version (PDF)

A CAD Sheet can have more than one Markup version (V1, V2, etc.) using the Upload Version button which locks the current version and creates a PDF in BIM 360. Each Markup version (V1, V2, etc.) can include multiple saved Markup sets using the Save Markup button which are works-in-progress.

  • When Markup starts on a new CAD Sheet, the Markup version is V1.

  • Whenever a Markup tool (Cloud, Circle, Text, etc.) is selected the Save Markup option will display.

  • Clicking Save Markup will:

    1. Save all new Markups into a Markup set since the last time Markups were saved.

    2. Add the Markup set to the Markups column including a date/time/user stamp.

    3. Enable the Upload Version button so that the markup changes can be permanently saved to a PDF and versioned.

  • Multiple Markup sets can be saved to each Markup version (Ex. V1).

  • Anyone with access to the CAD Sheet can edit a Markup version in progress.

  • When a Markup version (Ex. V1) is complete the version needs to be saved to BIM 360 as a PDF using the Upload Version button.

  • After clicking the Upload Version button, the Markup set will be saved as a PDF in BIM360 under the Project > Model > Assemblies > Assembly Name tab. Markup V1 is now locked. V2 can be started which will be built upon V1.

  • A user opening the CAD Sheet after version 1 (V1) has been Saved to Cloud will see that the Markup is on V2.

  • To view a previous version, click the Markup Version button.

  • Previous Markup versions will display. Previous Markup versions cannot be edited.

    1. To view the Markups of a specific Markup version, hover over the version, click the 3-dot menu and then click View. The saved PDF will display in a separate browser window.

  • Each time the Upload Version button is clicked the Markup version number will increase.

  • Toggle Visibility (eye icon)

  • When the Toggle Visibility button is enabled it means that the Markups associated with that Save are displaying.

  • When the Toggle Visibility button is disabled, it means the Markups are not currently being displayed.

  • X - Clicking the X closes the Markup panel. Any unsaved Markups will be lost.

  • Upload Version

    Use the Upload Version option to save the markup changes to BIM 360 as a PDF.

    1. After the Save Markup button has been clicked at least once, the Upload Version button is enabled.

    2. Click the Upload Version will store all markup changes as a retrievable PDF version in BIM 360.

      Note: PDF files created by saving a Markup to the cloud increment the Attachments tab count, but do not display the file in the Attachment tab.

      Unsaved Markup Note: If a markup is added to a page and before it is saved the user clicks either the Next Page or Previous page button, or the X in the top right corner of the the Markup Tools panel, any unsaved Markups will be lost. See the Save Markup section for more information.

    Save Markup

    1. When done placing a Markup, click the Save Markup button. As a result:

      1. The Markup will display in the Markup Tools table and the initial markup will be automatically named Markup 1. This name can be manually edited. The User and Date-Time will also be automatically entered.

      2. The Upload Version button will be enabled.

      3. For the Packages Attachments and Assemblies Attachments table:

        1. The Markups pencil icon will change to green indicating there is an editable markup associated with the .PDF.

          1. Note: When the Markups pencil icon is blue, it indicates that the PDF can be marked up but there are no active Markups. If the version is V2 or higher, it means that previously active Markups have been Uploaded Versioned to BIM360 and are no longer editable.

        2. The active unversioned Markup will display a number to the left of the Markups pencil icon indicating the number of editable markups on the .PDF (Ex 1).

      4. Anyone with access can view/edit this active unversioned Markup.

    2. A separate Markup can be made.

      1. Click a Markup Tool, place it in the viewer, and click Save Markup.

      2. As a result:

        1. The new Markup will display in the table and will be automatically named Markup 2. This name can be manually edited.

        2. The active unversioned Markup will display a number to the left of the Markups pencil icon indicating the number of editable markups on the .PDF (Ex 2).

    Markup a Multipage PDF Attachment

    For PDF (Package and Assembly) attachments, to Markup a multipage PDF attachment:

    1. From the Attachments tab, click Markups pencil icon associated with a PDF that has more than one page.

    2. Markup Tools will add a page selector tool.

    3. The PDF viewer will only display one page of the PDF at a time. As a result, each page:

      1. Can be marked up individually.

      2. Will have it’s own list of saved markups.

    4. To markup a page, use the Next Page or Previous page buttons to change pages, click a Markup Tool, place it in the viewer, and click Save Markup.

      1. Unsaved Markup Note: If a markup is added to a page and before it is saved the user clicks either the Next Page or Previous page button, or the X in the top right corner of the the Markup Tools panel, any unsaved Markups will be lost.

    Edit a PDF Markup Attachment

    1. Anyone with Project Role permission can view/edit the Markup.

    2. From the Attachments tab, click Markups pencil icon associated with a PDF that has one or more Markups.

    3. Each page that has a markup will display all markups.

    4. To edit an individual markup, click the markup row. The markup will display in the viewer in edit mode.

      1. The selected markup will be isolated and will be editable.

      2. The Save Markup button will display.

    5. Select the markup within the PDF. In this example, a Text markup was selected. The Font Size control displays along with a delete button.

    6. In this example, the font size, text, and position have been changed. Note: Click Cancel to exit edit mode.

    7. Before saving, another Markup (Ex. Arrow) can be added. Note: Click Cancel to exit edit mode.

    8. Click Save Markup. As a result:

      1. The existing Markup will be saved with the edited information. The selected page now has 2 active markups (Markup 1 has only 1 active markup; Markup 2 has 2 active markups). With no markups selected in the table, all markups for the page are displayed.

    View a PDF Markup

    1. Anyone with Project Role permission can view/edit the Markup.

    2. Go to the Attachments tab and click the Markups pencil icon associated with a PDF.

    3. By default, all markups for the page will display.

    4. To isolate a markup, select the Markup Tools row (Ex. Markup 2). The selected markup will display and is editable. Note: Click Cancel to exit edit mode.

    Delete an Individual Markup from the PDF Viewer

    Use this delete method when you want to delete one of many markups within a single saved markup table row.

    1. Anyone with Project Role permission can delete the Markup.

    2. From the Attachments tab, click the green Markups pencil icon associated with a PDF. The green pencil icon indicates an active markup.

    3. Select a Markup row (Ex. Markup 2). In this example, Markup 2 includes 2 markups within the PDF viewer (Text that reads Markup2-2 and a blue arrow).

    4. Select one of the markups (Ex. the arrow). The Delete button will display in the PDF viewer.

    5. Click the Delete button and then click the Save Markup button. The individual markup will be deleted.

    Delete a PDF Markup From the Markup Table

    Use this delete method when you want to delete all markups within a single saved markup table row.

    1. Anyone with Project Role permission can delete the Markup.

    2. From the Attachments tab, click the green Markups pencil icon associated with a PDF. The green pencil icon indicates an active markup.

    3. In this example, Markup 2 includes 2 markups within the PDF viewer.

    4. Click the Delete button in the Markups table row associated with the markup to be deleted (Ex. Markup 2). The markup row will be deleted and the markup in the viewer no longer display.

    5. As a result:

      1. The Markup row will be deleted.

      2. The Markups within the PDF viewer will be deleted.

      3. The active unversioned Markup will change from 2 to 1.

    Upload Version (Lock)

    A Markup can have more than one Markup version (V1, V2, etc.) using the Upload Version button which locks the current version and creates a PDF in BIM 360. Each Markup version (V1, V2, etc.) can include multiple saved Markup sets using the Save Markup button which are works-in-progress.

    The Upload Version button is enabled when a markup has been saved. Once the Upload Version button is clicked, the next time the PDF Attachment is opened or previewed, the markups will display, permanently overwriting the original PDF.

    1. To enable the Upload Version button, create and save a Markup.

    2. Click the Upload Version button. Markup V1 is now locked. V2 can be started which will be built upon V1. After the PDF is uploaded to BIM 360 the page will be updated with the following:

      1. Active Markups - The Active Markup in the Markup table disappear as they are now embedded within the PDF.

      2. Markup Version - The Markup Version increments (Ex. from V1 to V2). This indicates that the next markup placed in the PDF viewer will be associated with V2.

      3. Version Selection - The Version Selection button displays at the bottom of the Markup tools.

      4. Upload Version - The Upload Version button is disabled.

    Print or View Previous Markup Versions

    1. From the Attachments tab, click the Markups pencil icon associated with a versioned markup (Ex. version is V2 or higher).

    2. Click the Markup Versions button at the bottom of the Markup Tools toolbar. The toolbar will collapse and Markup Versions will display.

      1. Highlight the version to be printed (Ex. V1)

      2. Click the 3-dots icon.

      3. Click the View button.

    3. In a separate browser tab, the PDF file will display. Use the browser’s print tool to print the PDF.

    Markup Tool Summary

    The following Markup tools are available.

    Note: To change the color of a tool, select a color using the pencil or paint buck before selecting the Markup tool.

    1. Freehand

      1. Click and hold down the mouse to display (2) Freehand options, Freehand and Highlight.

      2. Freehand (left) - Select the tool, then click and drag to draw freehand lines and curves as if you were outlining them on paper with a pen or pencil.

      3. Highlight (right)- Select Freehand > highlight, then click and drag to draw freehand highlighted lines and curves.

    2. Text - Select the tool, click in the document, type your text, and press Enter. To set the text color: 1) Select the Line Style color, 2) Click the Text tool, 3) Use the Text tool to enter text.

    3. Callout

      1. Callout - Select the tool and click in the CAD Sheet canvas. Click and drag the tool to place the arrow. Let go of the mouse and the Callout Text box will display. You can format and resize the text box, as well as select the text box fill color. The Callout Text box and the Arrow are 2 different objects. Therefore, they cannot be moved together but can be moved separately. Click Save Markup.

    4. Cloud

      1. Click and hold down the mouse to display (2) cloud options, a rectangle and a Polycloud.

      2. Cloud - Select the tool, then click and drag to draw the rectangle cloud. Select the object to use the rotation tool.

      3. Polycloud - Select Cloud > Polycloud, then click to place the first point, and continue clicking to draw cloud segments. Double-click to close the shape.

    5. Shapes

      1. Click and hold down the mouse to display (3) shape options.

      2. Rectangle - Select Shapes > Rectangle, then click and drag to draw, or click two points to place the top left and bottom right corners.

      3. Circle - Select Shapes > Oval, then click and drag to draw, or click to specify the top right corner, and drag to draw. Drag diagonally a circle or right/left/up/down for an ellipse.

      4. Line \ Polyline - Select Shapes > Polyline, then click to place first point, and continue clicking to draw line segments. Double-click to close the shape.

    6. Arrow - Select the tool, then click and drag to draw.

    7. Line Style (Color) - Select the tool, then choose the desired line color and Line Thickness. Add a Markup (Ex. Arrow, Cloud, Shape, not Text) and the thickness will display.

    8. Fill Style (Color) - Select the tool, then choose the desired fill color and the Opacity.
